When readers have countless books for their choosing, a striking cover can make the biggest difference. So now, the all-important question is, what makes an effective book cover?
If you’ve decided to self-publish your book, here are pointers to help you in the cover design process:
Have a main focus for the cover – nothing could be more important. Your book conveys something, and its cover has to reflect that one exact idea distinctly. Avoid stuffing your cover with so many elements.
Think of your book cover as a billboard, trying to catch prospects’ attention as they speed by. Billboards often have 6 words at most. You have to grasp the message in 3-5 seconds at 60 miles per hour. That applies to your book cover. At a glance, your prospect should know your book’s genre, focus, and tone.
Whatever you include in your design should have a role in your communication with the reader. Every element should be there for a reason.
White backgrounds will disappear on retailers’ white screens, so don’t use one. Instead, create one with a different color or at least a texture, or an illustration. The last thing you want is to lose sales because a very trivial issue that you could have well avoided, if only you paid attention.
Reduce your cover design to about the size of an Amazon thumbnail and see if it’s still readable. It should be readable.
Talking about readability, choose a font that’s easy to read even when reduced radically. Also, stay away from those thin and lacy script typefaces – they usually become invisible when small.
Choose an image that clarifies instead of being too literal. For example, it may expresses the mood or the era during which the events took place.
This may be tricky as your choice of colors will clearly depend on the general theme or tone of your book. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t use too many so you don’t distract readers from your cover’s main message. Also check out some color palettes online and choose a selection of colors that you think will work well together.
Remember, it’s not about copying anybody’s work; you just want some inspiration so you can create an equally successful cover. You won’t believe how this can help you create your own ideas and concepts.
